Yeah Gary! Some of the new RnB and breakbeat stuff that's around is very hip! I think it comes from the MPC programming, where the hihat, snare and bass are all sequenced slightly out of time with each other, so you get a wierd 'dragging' effect. Killing!
Sweep is great at that - you should ask him about it.

Secretly I still enjoy listening to that stuff every now and again, but it sounds like musical training wheels(overtly stated) to my ears now.

The drum n' bass stuff is awesome. I also feel Carter Bfrds stuff is great too especially when he messes with the pulse, if you get a chance to see DMB live he's the show and he's allover the place. Yes I agree sometimes he's way over the top but the guy is doing his thang and doing it well. What a great gig he has. He takes risks and works HARD every night. It's funny because I've seen the guy mess up, came in a sixteenth behind after one of his over the top Cobham licks and just as the whole band was turning around to look at him he shifted again right back into place, the mark of a real pro.

I was listening to the central Scrutinizer the other day.

Damn, that is a HIP BEAT. I love that thing.

The one fill after the big gong smash, the descending fill with the flam at the front.

That will never be not cool.

IMO, this bass and drum stuff is SO played out. I mean, how many years has it been around and I still listen to that fast typical standard weedly-weedly beat and turn it off. Once Bowie used it, it was unhip.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Drum and Bass? Are you talking about the Bowie song "Little Wonder"? That was a killer tune! But I am talking about playing D&B/Jungle on an acoustic kit, not just using the loops from '95! lol

I know this isn't exactly what was orig asked, but...

HIP:

Music.
HONEST music.

This includes much jazz, rock, funk, blues, RnB, soul, motown, classical, symphony/orchestra, bluegrass, mid-east, pop, fusion, vocal, easy-listening, & many of their indy AWA collective sub-genres.
Parodies are OK too! ;c)
*choke* - even a few smooth jazz songs! [aagh]...Kenny G, Yawni, P White, Chaquico, & Tesh paid me BIG $$ to say that, at least a buck & a half each...

Mid-size kits...

====================================

NOT hip:

Music designed to sell in a category bin [much commercial "music"] or to promote a BS youngster "attitude," or to sell fashion or products...

Pretentious music [often one in the same]...

Trendy fads...this includes anything played [beat] to death on TV & radio! ;cP [often one in the same]...

eMpTyV [often one in the same]...

Record company suits who think the onus is upon them <s>as to what sells BIG $$</s> to decide for EVERYONE what good music is [often one in the same]...

Anyone who is incessant upon putting their own fave style in "one bag" or "box" & having everyone else adhere to the same rules & criteria, to the exclusion of any other form or "sub-genre" of that same style, or other genres [AKA "Old Fogie / Hung Up in an Era or Style" Syndrome or stylistic nazism]; [PERSONAL PET PEEVE]

Anyone bagging on guys like Vinnie, Weckl, Chambers, Donati, Novak, etc, because they are accomplished players who have great technique & ideas & aren't afraid to show it when called for [AKA, Jealous Cretins because they didn't put in the time & effort to excel & don't like those others getting credit where it's due];

Anyone bagging on a player like Gadd or Ersk because they are NOT "chops guys," who often choose NOT to use their considerable "chops" often when it wouldn't serve the tune at hand [AKA, those hung up on chops];

Drum-competitions [with the exception of healthy-comp, within Drum & Bugle, Marching Corps type];

Most exclusively strictly electronic / machine / sequenced music - bleccchhh

Bubble gum, cutesy-pie, or teenie pop - [it was NEVER hip!!]

Most commercial radio...

HUGE kits...

SMALL kits...

Anyone telling anyone else which sized kits are "un-hip" for whatever style or genre... ;cp
[To me, the only guys who made small kits acceptable in a "rock" or pop type situation were Ringo & Bonzo - & that was the time period AW...] /;cp

Parents who are obsessed w getting mediocre little Johnny or Johnette the elusive Big Record Deal & enter them into all the local, regional, & state fair compets becuse theyre living vicariously through...similar to some of the Beauty Queen Pageant Parents Syndrome]...yucchhh

The western AWA other pop culture attitude toward the dumbing down of a lot of music...

Peeps that have too much time to type these longer posts, like this one... /;cP

============

WHAT?! Racks aren't HIP anymore, Chris?! Are you sure?!!

I think the small kit deal is starting to wane itself, much as the large Titanic Exhibit kits did from the 80s...it's been around a long time, & I don't see many revolutionizing the concept in the pop-rock world...they might as well have the huge USS Triumph/Rush/Bobby Rock kit & not play it too...

Play a kit that reflects what you are going to use in the playing on any given night - if this involves a few more drums, cymbals, & spcl-FX cymbals / chimes / perc / bells & whistles [a la Carter B], then so be it.

Drum and bass/jungle...bah. All sounds like ten inch snares in a blender to me.

If it doesn't groove, it ain't hip, dig?

the Gaucho groove is still hip.

Peter Erskine is still hip.

Fuse (aka matchgrip) said it all once again, except...

Mike Clark's playing on "Thrust" and Tony on "Four and More" always was and always will be the hippest to the highest hipicity!!!
